Keratin vs. Japanese Straightening: Which Treatment Is Right for You?

The question I get most often in consultations: “What’s the difference between keratin and Japanese straightening?” Both reduce frizz and straighten the hair, but they work differently, last different amounts of time, and suit different hair types.

Keratin Treatment

Keratin smoothing treatments, like Brazilian Blowout or similar smoothing systems, coat the outside of the hair shaft with a keratin protein layer. They reduce frizz significantly and make hair easier to style, but they don’t permanently alter the hair’s internal structure.

Results last: 2–3 months depending on hair type and how often you wash
Best for: Wavy to moderately curly hair, color-treated hair, anyone who wants flexibility
Downside: Not truly permanent; needs refreshing; can’t swim or use sulfate shampoos for the first few days

Japanese Straightening

Japanese straightening (thermal reconditioning) permanently breaks and reforms the internal protein bonds of the hair. The result is bone-straight, glossy hair that requires minimal daily styling. The straightening is permanent on the treated hair, so only new growth needs re-treating – usually in 6-9 months.

Results last: Permanent on treated hair; touch-up needed every 6–9 months on roots
Best for: Naturally wavy to very curly hair, anyone who wants to eliminate daily styling entirely
Downside: Requires commitment, you can’t go back to curly without cutting the treated hair; not ideal for heavily damaged hair
