Even a hair tie left in overnight can leave a crease that’s difficult to reverse. This window is short, but it’s the single most important part of aftercare, and it’s the step clients are most tempted to skip.

Choosing the Right Products

Once you’re past that initial period, product choice becomes the next variable. Sulfate-heavy shampoos strip the hair and can compromise the smoothness of a straightening treatment over time, so we recommend a sulfate-free, moisture-balanced shampoo and conditioner formulated for chemically treated hair. Heavy, silicone-based styling products can also work against you. They build up on straightened strands and eventually weigh the hair down or dull its natural shine. A light leave-in treatment and a good heat protectant, used sparingly, tend to serve our Chicago clients best.

This is when a richer conditioning mask once a week, along with a humidifier at home, makes a noticeable difference. Clients who treat their hair the same way year-round in Chicago are often the ones who come back frustrated that their results “didn’t last,” when in reality the season changed and their routine didn’t.

Timing Your Touch-Up

Because Japanese straightening treats the hair you have at the time of your appointment, new growth will come in with its natural texture. Most clients need a touch-up between six and nine months later, depending on how quickly their hair grows. The tricky part is that touch-ups should only be applied to new growth — reapplying the treatment over previously straightened hair can cause over-processing and breakage.
